Data Assimilation and Model Evaluation Experiment : North Atlantic Basin

چکیده
SCIENTIFIC/TECHNICAL OBJECTIVES Modeling objectives are: (1) to produce a new generation of basin-scale ocean circulation models based on the spectral nite element technique; (2) to compare the performance of the resulting nite element model with that of more traditional ocean circulation models; (3) to couple the resulting basin-scale model to sub-basin-scale models for (e.g.) the coastal boundary layers; and (4) to apply the resulting nested suite of models to studies of regional dynamics and data assimilation. Present observational objectives are the development of selected data assimilation and validation datasets for the North Atlantic during the 1993 hindcast test period, including satellite AVHRR imagery, TOPEX altimetry and CTD/XBTs.

Nowcast/Forecast System For Coastal/Open Ocean Regions
LONG-TERM GOALS To develop and evaluate a nowcast/forecast system for coastal/open ocean regions with the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). OBJECTIVES a) To evaluate the model's performance in reproducing the oceanic circulation, with a special focus on the coastal regions; b) To evaluate the model's forecast skills and usefulness in providing boundary conditions for ultra fine-mesh coasta...
متن کاملImpact of ocean observation systems on ocean analysis and seasonal forecasts
The relative merits of the TAO/TRITON and PIRATA mooring networks, the VOS XBT network, and the ARGO float network are evaluated through their impact on ocean analyses and seasonal forecast skill. An ocean analysis is performed in which all available data are assimilated. In two additional experiments the moorings and the VOS data sets are withheld from the assimilation. To estimate the impact ...
متن کاملApplication of the Gaussian anamorphosis to assimilation in a 3-D coupled physical-ecosystem model of the North Atlantic with the EnKF: a twin experiment
We consider the application of the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) to a coupled ocean ecosystem model (HYCOM-NORWECOM). Such models, especially the ecosystem models, are characterized by strongly nonlinear interactions active in ocean blooms and present important difficulties for the use of data assimilation methods based on linear statistical analysis. Besides the non-linearity of the model, one...

[1] An eddy-permitting 1=4 global ocean reanalysis based on the Operational Met Office FOAM data assimilation system has been run for 1989–2010 forced by ERA-Interim meteorology. Freshwater and heat transports are compared with published estimates globally and in each basin, with special focus on the Atlantic. The meridional transports agree with observations within errors at most locations, bu...
متن کاملStrategies for nested and eddy-permitting state estimation
[1] Both ocean process and prediction studies increasingly rely on state estimation (i.e., data assimilation) to provide the most complete representation of how the ocean circulates. This study applies the formalism and methodology of state estimation, recently developed for the global, coarse-resolution problem, to eddy-permitting state estimation in regional domains. Two major challenges exis...
